Beautiful Nebraska!! Washington's 4th grade has been working on their map skills with this GIANT map of Nebraska. They've discussed elevation, rivers & tributaries, watershed, population, distance between cities, cardinal directions, angles, and map features. They've had a blast and even discovered how bright the room gets when the GIANT map is open. What?! It's not Halloween! BUT Mrs. Mortimer's 2nd grade DID just finish up their study of the human body. They celebrated by creating skeletons from dry pasta and had cinnamon roll "intestines" with pureed cherry pie filling. Reading is FUNdamental!! The students in Mrs. Mortimer's 2nd grade class who logged 200+ reading minutes at home during February were finally able to celebrate today. They made homemade play dough! What a messy, fun activity! #WildcatEra #WashingtonOhana #ReadersHaveFun

Cobblers and tailors and bakers, oh my!! Washington's Kindergarteners wrapped up their Colonial Times unit by making butter in a jar! Thanks to the help of Grandma Janice all students enjoyed a delicious treat of fresh bread and butter! They had cobblers, blacksmiths, millers, weavers, spinners, tailors, dressmakers and bakers. #WildcatEra #WashingtonOhana #LearningIsFun

Our 5th Grade Ambassadors had a special guest speaker today. Mayor Brandon Kelliher took time out of his busy schedule to share a bit about his role as Mayor, advice for growing leaders, and even a little Washington Elementary history. The students asked him all sorts of questions and he even peppered them with a few. We all walked away with both encouragement and a challenge - to learn to communicate well! A Washington "Catch Up" Post! Last Friday, Mrs. Mortimer's 2nd graders finished up their Civil War unit by creating nurse hats in honor of Clara Barton. Her role as a nurse and advocate for wounded soldiers led to the creation of the American Red Cross. We celebrated with bandage snacks! #WashingtonOhana #WildcatEra #LearningIsFun #ClaraBarton

Washington PTO's No Sale Fundraiser Update! Mr. Ferguson's kindergarten class raised the most money this year. He was awarded a $100 Walmart gift card for his classroom. Mrs. Mortimer's 2nd grade class had the most participants and was awarded a gift basket! Thank you to all who worked so hard fundraising and to those who donated to our school!! Oral Storytelling was also introduced to our young Wildcats by Mr. Furlong! He shared about how oral storytelling is an age old tradition of sharing stories long before we all had books to read! Mr. Furlong heard the story years ago and never quite got the actual title. It was about an elephant called Barabaa. Mrs. Schultz' 5th graders will each receive a free slushy because their class had the most minutes read last week with a total of 5,000 minutes!! Mrs. Mortimer's 1st graders will also each receive a free slushy for raising the most money. They raised a grand total of $1,195!! Wildcats! What a WEEK!! Check out Mrs. Milton and Mrs. Vencill's parent engagement event from today! Their 1st graders were able to show off their reading skills by reading to their parents! They colored bookmarks, enjoyed a Language Arts lesson, munched snacks, and cuddled up with good books. Best day ever! (Check out more photos on Facebook.)
