The NPHS speech team traveled to Grand Island for the second Central Nebraska Forensics League (CNFL #2) tournament. Our competitors earned 21 medals and the novice team was 2nd place overall.
Between the snowball dance Friday night and actual snow on Saturday, our students rose to the challenge and performed really well today. First time medalists in Novice Duet Rebecca Keneipp and Juliana Jewell were a pleasant surprise after working so hard this season. It's great when more kids get rewarded for their efforts, especially lately in the season when the competition is tougher.
Marisa Pfeifer won the team "Bulldog Award" for winning her event, Novice Poetry, the first time this year she has done that.

Congratulations to Ryan!!!

NPHS speech was up at 3:30 am and spent the next 19 hours traveling and competing at the Lincoln Southwest speech tournament. This was the first of two tournaments in Lincoln we will attend this year.
This tournament was also a National Individual Events Tournament of Champions (or NIETOC) bid tournament. To earn a spot at the national tournament, individuals must earn bids at two tournaments on the season. The number of bids awarded is based on how many entries compete in each event. Some of the events in this tournament had 80+ entries from Class A and B schools we never see the rest of the year. Making it into the semifinals is truly an accomplishment.
Joseph Roeder - semifinalist, 10th overall in Serious Prose (NIETOC bid)
Cyrus Fraizer - semifinalist in Humorous (NIETOC bid)
Quade Lowe - semifinalist, 16th overall in Extemp (NIETOC bid)
Lauren Engler - semifinalist, 18th overall in Poetry
Joseph Roeder & Levi Luenenborg - semifinalists, 7th overall, Duo
Reyna Wiezorek and Phinehas Wiezorek - semifinalists, 8th overall, Duet Acting
*Note: Duo and Duet were different events at this tournament
This tournament was a real challenge for our team but also a great learning experience. Eastern Nebraska speech is vastly different from the rest of the state, so going to Lincoln to see what they are doing will help us when it comes time for district and state competitions. Additionally, there was no novice division which means our novice competitors were thrown in with varsity. This allowed them to see top quality performances and really grow for the future.
The other coaches (Megan Kelley and Kim Boyer) and I are very proud of how our team rose to the challenge and how they performed on the day. Now we get to look at what we will change and prepare for a return to Lincoln in two weeks.
