Students seeing a quilt that tells the history of Nebraska

In fourth grade classrooms across NPPS, Nebraska history arrived in the creative form of quilts. Students were greeted by members of the Heartland Quilters’ Guild of North Platte, who carried with them pieces of the past stitched together by hand. As the quilts were unfolded, each one revealed more than patterns and colors. They told stories of families, traditions, creativity, and life on the prairie.

Among the treasures were two quilts dating back to the 1890s, giving students a chance to experience history with all their senses. Students enjoyed learning how quilting has long been woven into Nebraska’s story, especially here in our own community.

The visit ended with students designing their own paper quilt square, adding their own colors and ideas, and joining them together to form a class quilt to display in their schools.

We are grateful to the Heartland Quilters’ Guild of North Platte for sharing their time and talents with our students and helping bring Nebraska history to life.
