How can parents get more involved with my High School student's IEP/Transition Plan
Parent involvement is an integral part of transition planning and vital to its success. The parent is the ultimate advocate for the student. Parents have the greatest responsibility for transition planning. The parents and student must decide what services are needed to reach the best outcome. Therefore, parents must be knowledgeable about the transition process, current legislation, and available resources. Parents can assist by:
Actively participate in the IEP process. Parents share the right and responsibility to voice their wishes for their child.
Encourage your student to attend the IEP meeting. The student's future and present plan is discussed at the IEP meeting, so the student should be there to voice their wishes.
Provide vital information to the school and adult service agencies so the best transition services can be provided to the student
Help your student set and obtain realistic goals.
What is transition?
Transition refers to the period of time when a student is preparing to leave school and enter the adult community. It is the bridge between the security and the structure of school and the opportunities and risks of adult life. Nebraska State Law mandates that transition planning must be implemented for all students enrolled in Special Education by age 16 to ensure that students have the skills necessary to live and work in the community.
Why do we need to provide Transition Services?
Transition Services are defined as "a coordinated set of activities for a student which promote successful movement from school to post-school activities." (IDEA) These post-school activitites may include: post-secondary education, vocational training, employment, adult services, independent living, or community participation. These activities must be based on the student's needs, interests, and preferences. When Transition Services are planned in the IEP, 8 areas must be addressed.
Post-school measurable goal that includes employment, training, and living.

Is there a cost for Special Education services?
There is no cost to parents for special education services. The school district is responsible for costs associated with providing services to students who qualify for services.
We're moving into the district and my child has an IEP.
What should I do to get services for my child who has an IEP now that we have moved into the district?
Please make staff at your child's school aware of his IEP when you enroll your student in school. At this time, the school will have you sign a release so that we may request a current copy of their MDT (Multidisciplinary Team Report.) and IEP (Individual Education Program.) Upon receipt of the records, the team may adopt the current IEP from their previous school or place them on a 45 day temporary placement based on their previous IEP. This allows NPPSD staff to work with your child, determine if they meet Nebraska Department of Education verification criteria, and make the best placement for your child.
What Special Education services does your district provide?
Special education services are provided depending on individual needs and the "adverse effect the impairment has on the development or education performance of the student." (Rule 51) Services may include, but are not limited to:
