North Platte High School | Science
Hello, my name is Todd Ascherl and I am originally from Clare IA. which is near Ft. Dodge. In 1977 I graduated from St. Edmond’s High School in Ft. Dodge IA. While at Briar Cliff College I met my future wife, Cathy (DeRocher) Ascherl, and we married after graduation in February of 1982 while she was working as a chemist for Knox Gelatin in Sioux City IA. We have eight children and are in the process of adopting one more. In 1981 I received a Bachelor’s degree in Health, Physical Education & Recreation with a minor in Biology. In 2000 I received my Pre-K – 12 Administration Master’s degree from Wayne State College in Wayne NE.
Since 1982 I have had the opportunity to teach several different subjects. Early in my career I taught K-12 PE but after 4 years the emphasis changed to science. Since then I have taught 7th Life Science, 8th Earth Science, Freshman Physical Science, Sophomore Biology, Chemistry, Anatomy/Physiology, and Physics. In addition, I have taught college level Anatomy/Physiology, Physics, On-Line Physical Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Microbiology. From 1997-1998 I served as the PreK-12 Principal for a private school in Iowa.
Currently I am in my 8th year as a Physics, Chemistry, and College Credit Chemistry instructor at North Platte Public Schools, although periodically I teach Physical Science or Biology as needed. While growing up I was raised on a farm and in college I had several different construction jobs. It is through that experience that I try to base my classes. It is not enough to get the correct answer! It is also important to know why that answer is correct. Real world applications are paramount!
Like many other instructors coaching and extracurricular activities have also been a part of my experience. The following lists the sports/activities I have had to opportunity to be involved in. Assistance and JH Football, Head, Assistant, and JH Wrestling, Assistant and Head Girls Gymnastics, Head Cross Country, Head Golf, Assistant 3 on 3 Girls Basketball, Assistant Track, Student Counsel, Science Department Head, Weightlifting Coordinator, and Capital Campaign Director.
Finally, this bio would not be complete with some potpourri about myself. Our 13 (soon to be 15) grandchildren are the light of our lives and when we are not busy watching them grow we spend our time camping, rock climbing and riding ATV’s. We also have had the awesome opportunity to build our own homes. We are currently finishing our 3rd home and this may well be our last. If you wish you can go to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2AFLIFW-gs and view the log home we built in O’Neill.
