State Reading Classic Contest-Division III wins State Runner-up
Two teams from Adams Middle School represented Lincoln County at the 20th annual State Reading Classic Contest in Utica on April 12, 2010. The Contest is sponsored by the Nebraska State Reading Association.
The Division III seventh and eighth grade team members; Amna Al-Jumaily, Anna Baltz, Myrissa Nearman, Kaylee Thompson, Jessica Wolcott and Hailey Wright won a trophy and medals as runners-up. Mrs. Baltz helped.
The Division II sixth grade team included Camerin Burtle, Amelia Davis and Jamie Hawley. Mrs. Claudette Wielchowski, Library Media Specialist at Adams Middle School, coaches both teams.
During the semi-finals, the teams wrote their answers to questions given by a moderator. These questions are about the books on the Reading Classic recommended list and one current event question. There were three rounds of ten questions each. The two teams with the most correct questions moved on to compete in the final round.
In the final round, each competitor can push a buzzer and answer the question orally. The team with the most correct answers is the winner. The final score was 6-5. The winning team was Tri-County School from Jefferson County.
This is the first time that these girls have attended the contest. Many of them were on the team last year. We were unable to go to the contest then because the weather in our area inhibited our going
We would like to thank our families, teachers, Mr. Rhodes and the school system plus the North Platte School Foundation for their support of our teams’ efforts. The NPPSD Foundation awarded a grant to the Reading Classic teams to help with the expenses of the bus driver and fuel. The students held a bake sale to help defray the cost of their meals on the trip.
