North Platte Public Schools | Speech Pathologist

My name is Karen Bush.  I graduated from Sutherland High School in 1991. I knew as a Sophomore in high school that I wanted to be a speech pathologist. I attended speech therapy as an elementary student to improve my articulation.  I wanted to “pay it forward” by helping students in need improve their communication skills.

I attended Mid-Plains Community College for two years before transferring to the University of Nebraska – Lincoln, where I studied for one year.  Then I transferred to the University of Nebraska – Kearney (UNK) majoring in Communication Disorders and graduated in 1997 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Education.  I was accepted into the Speech-Language Pathology Graduate Program at UNK and graduated with my Master’s in Education in May, 1999.

I was hired by North Platte Public Schools as a Speech Pathologist and began working in August, 1999.  My first buildings I was fortunate to work at were Eisenhower Elementary, Osgood Elementary, Adams Middle School, and McDaid Elementary.  After a few years, we hired more speech pathologists and I was able to reduce my caseload to McDonald Elementary and McDaid Elementary.  I was employed by the district until I resigned in May, 2010 to take a position at the Sports and Therapy Center at Great Plains Regional Medical Center.

I realized the schools were a better fit for me and I rejoined the Speech Pathology Team at NPPSD in August, 2011.  I am currently the speech pathologist in the following buildings and programs:  Cody Elementary Resource 3 and general education, Adams Middle School Resource 3 and general education and North Platte High School Resource 3 and general education.  Due to our shortage of speech pathologists I have also been completing evaluations for McDaid Elementary and Madison Middle School. I have been very blessed to work with very talented and dedicated staff members over the years.   I am very fortunate to be employed by NPPSD for 17 years as a speech pathologist.  I plan to continue for at least another 17 years.
