Buffalo and McDonald | School Counselor
My name is Julie Smith and I am the elementary school counselor for McDonald and Buffalo Elementary Schools. Born and raised in North Platte, I graduated from North Platte High School, where I participated in choir and athletics. Following high school, I attended Mid-Plains Community College, where I competed in volleyball and basketball, also earning my Associate of Arts degree. Continuing my athletic career, I headed west to Pocatello, Idaho, where I received my Bachelor’s degree from Idaho State University, with a dual major in Physical Education and Special Education. I received my Master of Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Doane University and most recently, my Master of Education degree in School Counseling from Chadron State College.
My career in education began in 1995, as a Special Education instructor within the North Platte Public School District. I have also taught and coached in Sutherland and Hershey, making the transition from Special Education to School Counseling in 2015. No matter what aspect of education I am involved in, one thing holds true…all students are capable of learning and finding success. Connecting with others, building solid relationships, and having clear expectations are three areas that I feel strongly about. I want to encourage students to reach their full potential, believing in themselves while being positive leaders in everything they do. We have such a short time to make a positive impact in the lives of our children… make every day, and everyone, matter!
