North Platte Public School | School Nurse
My name is Karen Ochs. I am a registered nurse and work as a school nurse at Buffalo, Eisenhower, and Madison Schools. I grew up in Schoenchen, Kansas which is near Hays, Kansas. I attended Fort Hays State University where I obtained a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1988. My husband, Roger and I were married in 1987 and started our family in 1989. We have 4 grown children ranging from 18 years to 27 years old. My husband and I value education and have always made education a priority for our children.
I love nursing and have worked in a variety of healthcare settings during the last 28 years. My nursing career began in Hays, Kansas at a hospital where I worked on a medical/surgical floor and provided nursing care to a wide range of patients recovering from surgery. Shortly after my first son was born, I worked for nearly 5 years at Mary Lanning Hospital in Hastings, Nebraska. Our family then moved to North Platte where I worked at Great Plains Health for 18 years. During those 18 years I worked in a variety of settings while providing nursing care to people of all ages. These areas included labor and delivery, newborn care, dialysis, pediatrics, medical, orthopaedic & surgical settings. I then worked for 3 years with the veteran population at the VA Clinic in North Platte where my role included patient education for those with chronic health conditions such as diabetes and lung disease.
My career has now led me to the school setting where I am currently in my 4th year with North Platte Public Schools. I enjoy working with students of all ages and find school nursing to be unique as each day brings new situations and adventures.
