Adams Middle School | Social Studies
My name is Jim Whitney. I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in December 1974 after which I began my teaching and coaching career at Hershey, Nebraska in the fall of 1975. From there I spent the next 10 years at Yutan, Nebraska teaching Social Studies and coaching football and track. In 1986 I became the High School Principal/Activities Director at Yutan serving in that position for 4 years.
In the fall of 1990 I came to North Platte to be an Assistant Principal at North Platte High School. I was also the head boys soccer coach during this time. I served the North Platte Public Schools in those capacities until becoming the Principal at NPHS in 2004. I continued in that position until being assigned to McDonald Elementary for the 2010-11 school year.
Beginning in the fall of 2011 I worked as an adjunct professor for Chadron State College supervising student teachers in western Nebraska. I returned to the classroom in December 2012 as a 7th grade Social Studies teacher at Adams Middle School where I continue at this time. I also have served as an assistant boys soccer coach since returning to teaching.
My wife Patty is a Head Start teacher in North Platte. She has been doing this since 1991. We have 3 children all of whom are graduates of North Platte High School. Sarah Kaminski, teaches math at NPHS and is the head girls soccer coach. Jeff, is an attorney in Denver and Danny teaches World History and Government at NPHS and is also the head boys soccer coach.
As a middle school Social Studies teacher, I strive to help all my students develop an awareness and appreciation for our heritage and culture. In the process, I also work to help my students develop a good work ethic and an appreciation for the positive outcomes that are a product of putting into practice good habits. The culmination of which is a productive citizen who has the skills and abilities to to succeed in their chosen career.
