Discovering through Data

Second graders are great at collecting data using graphs.  So far in Miss Derickson’s class we have been collecting data by using bar graphs and pictographs.  We learned a lot about our classmates by making a bar graph of our favorite colors, animals, and sports.  Students have been learning how to read a graph and compare different items on the graphs.

Not only do we read graphs and collect data, we also create our own graphs!.  Our favorite thing to graph is food.  On Valentine’s Day we made a bar graph with the different colors of candy hearts in our box.  The next week we made a bar graph and pictograph using mini m&ms.  We then analyzed our graphs and shared the data that we found with our classmates.  Of course our favorite part was eating the m&ms when we were finished.

Miss Derickson’s class is not finished with graphing.  Soon we will move on to line plots and see what else we can discover.
