How can parents get more involved with my High School student's IEP/Transition Plan

Parent involvement is an integral part of transition planning and vital to its success. The parent is the ultimate advocate for the student. Parents have the greatest responsibility for transition planning. The parents and student must decide what services are needed to reach the best outcome. Therefore, parents must be knowledgeable about the transition process, current legislation, and available resources. Parents can assist by:
♦Actively participate in the IEP process. Parents share the right and responsibility to voice their wishes for their child.
♦Encourage your student to attend the IEP meeting. The student's future and present plan is discussed at the IEP meeting, so the student should be there to voice their wishes.
♦Provide vital information to the school and adult service agencies so the best transition services can be provided to the student
♦Help your student set and obtain realistic goals.
