Traffic Concerns

Traffic

by Dr. Midge Mougey

September 13, 2007

This is from a letter we sent to parents last year. It still holds true.

We have had several problems with vehicle traffic when children are being picked up after school. We have asked for the Police Department’s assistance in solving this problem before any children are injured. The police have monitored the area for several days now and have offered a suggestion as to how to reduce the problem and risk of danger to the children. I realize that the circle drive that is offered to pick up children after school gets filled up quickly. However, vehicles that are not in this circle drive cannot park or wait in the street to get into the drive. Vehicles should either wait down the street or park legally in another area while waiting for an opening. Vehicles that are waiting to turn in and are blocking traffic may be ticketed by police for “Impeding Traffic”. Traffic on 2nd Street cannot be blocked by people waiting to turn in. This forces other vehicles to swerve in and out to try and get around these vehicles. As you have certainly noticed this creates a very unsafe intersection for both pedestrians and other traffic in the area. We do what we can to make picking your child/ren up from school convenient for you, but our main concern is the safety of the children. The police and school will do what it takes to ensure that every child makes it off school grounds safely every day.

Also, please watch for and stop when our crossing guards enter the intersections to allow children and parents to walk to and from their vehicles. Drive slowly in the area as children are unpredictable at times and you can never tell when a child may dart into the street. As long as drivers in the area exhibit common sense and care we can better ensure the safety of the children. Additionally, things always go faster and more efficiently when done in an organized and safe manner.

Be aware that police will continue to monitor the situation and do what is necessary to keep things safe and ensure that traffic laws are obeyed.
